We developed a solution to enable simple ways for children to learn to read words.  The application is comprised of:

1.       A model-driven app to manage the data related to the application

2.       A canvas app for carrying out the learning activities

The solution comprised a Word Bank, with words separated into levels based on their complexity.  Students are able to login to the canvas app select a level and complete the learning challenges to help them learn words and improve their vocabulary.  The words will load on screen, a Bing API image search will find a related image to represent the word, and a Flow will run to a text-to-speech conversion to play the word out loud.  The phonetic representation of the word will also appear on screen.

Upon completion of a session, the results will be recorded and added to the Results entity in CDS.  Creation of a Result will also then generate badges to encourage repeat learning (e.g. Bronze badge for session duration, Gold badge for word complexity, etc.)

Future versions of this application could start will learning the phonemes, through to full words and sentences.  Similarly, graphemes could be incorporated to allow students to learn how to write the words, with pen input captured and compared against the word they were trying to spell.
